Intralesional steroid injections (ILS), particularly utilizing triamcinolone acetonide, are widely regarded as a standard treatment for various dermatological conditions such as keloids, alopecia areata, and circumscribed plaques of dermatitis.

 

Indications:

  1. Alopecia areata
  2. Excessive scar tissue formation 
  3. Dermatitis

Treatment details: 

Anesthetic - Topical numbing creams or local anesthesia

 

Possible side effects - ILS can vary depending on factors such as the dose administered, frequency of injections, and depth of injection.

 

  1. Localized side effects may include 
  2. Hypo-pigmentation (lightening of the skin) 
  3. Atrophy (thinning of the skin) 
  4. Pain at the injection site 
  5. Shrinkage of skin and hair follicles 
  6. Telangiectasia (dilation of small blood vessels) 
  7. Transient hair loss.

These side effects are mild and temporary. 

 

Treatment course - Multiple sessions spaced several weeks apart, depending on the specific condition being treated and the individual patient's response to treatment.
